The advisory from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Security Agency (NSA) and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has detailed the growing risk posed by ransomware and has urged businesses to take action to protect themselves from attacks. The NCSC describes ransomware as “the biggest cyber threat facing the United Kingdom”, with education one of the top targets of ransomware gangs, alongside businesses, charities, local government and the health sectors....

For the 2020-21 fiscal year, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) responded to 1,630 incidents, which works out to around 31 a week. Compared to the previous financial year, the total number of cybersecurity incidents in the 2020–21 financial year decreased by 28%. Other good news included ACSC not having to respond to any incidents in the top third of its six incident grading categories. In the year prior, it reported a single category 1 incident and four category 2 incidents....

While creators of the Raspberry Pi had modest hopes – they thought they might sell just 1,000 units or 10,000 at most – it had sold over 700,000 units within a year. Researchers behind the the National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, Time Savings When Working from Home, estimate that people who work from home use 40% of their commute-time savings on working on primary and secondary jobs. A further 34% goes to leisure, and 11% goes to caregiving. “These results suggest that much of the time savings flow back to employers, and that children and other caregiving recipients also benefit,” the researchers write....

Recorded Future security expert Dmitry Smilyanets shared multiple messages on Twitter from ‘0_neday’ – a known REvil operator – discussing what happened on the cybercriminal forum XSS. He claimed someone took control of the group’s Tor payment portal and data leak website. In the messages, 0_neday explains that he and “Unknown” – a leading representative of the group – were the only two members of the gang who had REvil’s domain keys....

The country saw a 25.2% climb in scams and cybercrimes last year, hitting 33,669 in reported cases, up from 26,886 in 2021.
