There’s growing momentum behind an effort to make programming language Rust a second language to C for the Linux kernel. Google is backing a project led by developer Miguel Ojeda that would see Rust being used to write elements of the Linux kernel, which now underpins some of the most critical pieces of the internet’s infrastructure today. Google argues that Rust should help reduce memory errors that lead to security vulnerabilities, which make up the bulk of flaws that tech firms and open-source projects fix in each update....

PM9C1a is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD integrated with a 5nm controller and the tech giant’s seventh-generation V-NAND. Samsung said the high-performance SSD is aimed at PCs and laptops for demanding computing and gaming applications. It has top sequential read and write speeds of 6,000MB/s and 5,600MB/s, respectively, which is 1.6 times and 1.8 times faster than its predecessor PM9B1, the South Korean tech giant said. Starting January 31, all businesses not on the Singapore SMS Sender ID Registry (SSIR) will have their messages labelled as “Likely-SCAM”, according to industry regulator Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). Registering with the SSIR will enable organisations to use alphanumeric Sender IDs when they push out SMS messages to customers. The mandate would better safeguard consumers against potential scams as well as facilitate tracking when scam messages were sent to local mobile users, the Singapore regulator said....

The Morello board is the product of a collaboration between Arm, Cambridge University, Microsoft and others based on the Capability Hardware Enhanced RISC Instructions (CHERI) architecture. MyRepublic carved out a new entity, called MyRepublic Broadband, for the transaction, which would encompass its consumer and enterprise customers in the city-state. StarHub Online, which comprises the telco’s broadband business, would acquire the MyRepublic shares. The acquisition would push StarHub’s share of the local broadband market to 40%, the two companies said in a joint statement Wednesday. MyRepublic currently has a 6% share of the market. In an email reply to ZDNet, MyRepublic’s chief investor relations officer Jeannie Ong confirmed the deal would only cover its broadband business in Singapore, and would not impact its mobile business here, as well as its platform business and other overseas entities....

Net profit for the period ending 31 December was NT$166 billion, up 16% year-on-year.
